There are many ways to use a telescope. Most people don’t take full use out of a telescope, so whether you are thinking of buying a telescope or already have a telescope, there is a need to know how to use a telescope effectively. This will allow you to get more out of astronomy.

Most people including me for several years did what is the obvious. Point up the telescope, and look what the point of light is that takes my fancy. This is a great way to get bored quickly! I once remember finding out about this. What do most people do? They look at let’s say Jupiter, and they see Jupiter. Wow, Jupiter, but then that’s it. We get bored and go looking for something else. It is like looking at your house from outside and seeing nothing much going on. It is only when you start interacting in that house that you find you can do so many things, and this is what happens with telescopes when you use them right.

Consider this. Look at Jupiter or whatever you are looking at, but study it. It is true color and not a picture, so it has all the details there. With a keen eye you can see a lot of detail.

A star atlas is essential. It is a map of the sky, similar to maps showing the directions for different states. This is a fundamental minimum. Without it you will need to know where all the constellations are, so you can zero into the right area that contains the space object you want to view.

This is really the boon of owning a telescope, but so few people do it. Let’s take for example an experiment I did with Jupiter. For years, when Jupiter was visible I would occasionally point the telescope to it, and see Jupiter. There is Jupiter I would exclaim! However that would be it.

So an experiment I did was to look at Jupiter exactly the same time each day for a period of a few days. I could see the change in Jupiter’s inclination and also the change in the positions of Jupiter’s moons. This allows me to do real science and get so much out of backyard astronomy.

A good practical astronomy book will allow you to go from novice to intermediate. It will help you see the best in the heavens and I recommend it sincerely.

It is a good idea to consider whether you want to be like Christopher Columbus and discover things or be able to view things. Telescopes come in computerized versions which can be great to key in the code and let the telescope zoom to the exact place where it is!
