Why Dobsonian Telescopes Are So Popular
If we consider Galileo’s telescope to toy store telescopes, we find that the toy store telescope is likely to be better than Galileo’s! Why then do so many people leave astronomy, because of those cheap telescopes?
The truth is that the problem is usually with the tripod. A cheap tripod makes a good telescope look bad, and a bad telescope, as a way to get out of astronomy.
Dobsonian telescopes have become so popular over the last few decades, because they address this problem direct. There is no tripod to hold the telescope on Dobsonian telescopes.
What the Dobsonian telescope has that is different, is that it has a tripod that makes it look like a canon! This has marked benefits. I am sure the military encountered such problems, and so likely went with the famous canon design.
The Dobsonian telescopes provide an easier way to view the heavens. And the Dobsonian’s have good optics added to it. So, you get a good telescope and also an easy way to move the telescope about.
This seems to be the greatest problem area for people. A cheap tripod could easily move about with even the slight breeze. And it seems as though the design of Dobsonian telescopes have addressed this. You can even find Dobsonian telescopes that you can hold in your arms, and look up to space. Talk about portable telescopes!
We can thank the Dobsonian telescopes design to John Dobson. John Dobson was born in 1915. He used a basic maneuvering mechanics that were used on historical canons to create a telescope on an apparatus that was easy to assemble, take out in public and move around. The Dobsonian telescope design led to a proliferation of telescope designs and sealed his name in amateur astronomy circles.
